These etching and drawings are part of a sustained investigation of the landscape in my immediate surroundings, the Manly Dam Catchment and the 270 hectares of bushland encircling it.
The bushland is dense, with areas of deep undergrowth, dense canopy and tracks winding off into the distance. I find it difficult to get my bearings. It is silent. To me, it is lonely, eerie and deeply unsettling. Yet it is inviting. My heart races when I am alone in the environment. No sooner do I enter, I want to leave. In my haste to leave I feel disorientated, claustrophobic.
The final etchings and drawings I produced are large scale (100 x 50cm) images based my encounters with the landscape. The later images concentrate on the dense undergrowth. The scale of the images and use of chiaroscuro is intended to draw the viewer into the landscape, yet feel unsettled - cloaked in the environment, disorientated, claustrophobic.
